Ever since the Jena 6 was broadcast, I find that nearly everywhere I look there is another noose incident. How can the United States grow as a diverse country if we, the citizens, cannot accept the people with whom we live? I have worked for the NYC Parks Department as a lifeguard for five years, and I am shocked that the employees would resort to such a despicable act of discrimination. I truly believed that New York is better than this. The image of a noose not only strips innocent people of their freedom but also their individuality. Last Friday's article should be acknowledged. When your children ask you about the town newspaper's front-page noose story, what will you tell them? I'm sure you won't want to explain to them that it is a symbol of death. But what other response would be as fitting? We should be teaching acceptance of the individual, not just tolerance of a culture, gender or race that is different from our own. It's not just the noose that is significant; it is the implication of strong racial discrimination that can only be changed if people stop being ignorant.
