Rockaway Bike Tour A Big Hit With Locals

The ride leaders from Transportation Alternatives, Emilia Crotty and Mike Heffron, head down Beach 125 Street toward the boardwalk.
On Sunday, November 4, members of Transportation Alternatives (Western Queens) and the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance joined forces to host a 55-mile bike ride from Astoria to Rockaway and back.

A large group participated in the fall ride, with Emilia Crotty and Mike Heffron of Transportation Alternatives leading almost 30 riders from Astoria to Rockaway.

Local Rockaway residents met up with the riders, who had braved their way from Astoria to Jacob Riis Park to start the Rockaway ride along the beach boardwalk. The Wave's own, Vivian Carter, gave riders a brief history of the Rockaways as she led the start of the Rockaway loop through Neponsit and Belle Harbor, and over to the boardwalk.

For many of the riders who came over from Brooklyn, this was their first trip to the Rockaways. There were a good mix of both accomplished riders on racing cycles and those on beach cruisers and mountain bikes. Once in the Rockaways, the group slowed to a relaxed pace as riders made their way carefully along the boardwalk to Beach 9 Street; watchful so as not to not puncture any tires on the wood boardwalk or on its many loose, protruding screws. But, as local Arverne By the Sea resident, Charles Jacobs, commented, "It was good company the length of the ride, giving riders a chance to get to know each other along the way."

Six-year-old Tyler Nishimoto brings up the tail end of the group, with a little help from Dad.
The youngest member of the riding group was bike trailer, Tyler Nishimoto, age 6, who got an extra boost from his father John, doing the majority of the work.

"We were very fortunate to have such great weather and one last day in the sun before the winter sets in," said Jeanne DuPont of the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance. "We did this ride to get input from riders on improvements for the greenway path connecting the Rockaways to the rest of NYC.

This was a good test run and hopefully will encourage future rides through the Rockaways."
Riders reflect on the day's ride at the halfway point, taking a break before heading back to Brooklyn and Astoria.
