Sweeny, a retired New York State Trooper, was born in New York City. He was preceded in death by his brother John Sweeny, M.D.; and sisters, Patricia Malach and Priscilla. He is survived by his wife Hannah (nee Barrett) Sweeny; children, Michele Bolger, Michael Jr., Hannah Young, Regina Cassino and Denise McHam; grandchildren, Robert, Kevin, Sarah, Judy, Chelsea, Liam, Michael, Zachary, Joseph, Brian, Michael, Matthew, Madison and Makenzi; brothers, Denis, Paul, and Timothy; sisters, Joan, Helen, Brigid Hanken, Mary Healy, Rita Kenny, Nora L'Eplattenier, and Debra Hirsch.
Funeral arrangements and visitation were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales. Interment was at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Oneida, New York.
