Click Here for More Information Community Immunity Pens don't write books, levels don't build buildings and guns don't kill people. People do these things...willfully, knowingly & cunningly. Regrettably, the Rockaway thugs who perpetrate violence, do so - often times - thru the indifference of locals. The thugs are granted - so to speak - 'community immunity', much like government emissaries are granted diplomatic immunity. In the projects, and around the Peninsula, eyes don't see, ears don't hear, camcorders don't record and mouths don't speak. With relative impunity, drug-dealin' thugs strike at will. For those good-hearted people and community leaders who sponsor selfhelp meetings, I would suggest they rally around 'Report the Violence' campaigns. Those good hearted people who attend sit-ins and marches can, in effect, stop the violence by reporting the violence. Give these good & concerned people a viable option, a concrete opportunity to help themselves and improve their neighborhood. Our MTA has been successful with their 'If You See Something, Say Something' campaign, and I would suggest to groups like Rockaway's Weed & Seed Project that they post posters around the the Peninsula - and especially in our City Housing Projects - heralding 'If You See Something, Say Something'. I would suggest that Precinct Commander McMahon, while establishing a better rapport with the good people of his precinct, establish a special 'thug alert' hot-line, and maybe a text message center, so people can report immediately and cops can act decisively. The message, though, needs to be heard from all corners...maybe the rapper 'True' or other like-minded rappers can really make names for themselves and at the same time bring great peace to their peoples by singing of those who can't see, won't hear, and don't speak, as the hood rings with violence and spirals into chaos. That would be - I believe - a heartfelt and helpful rap.
