Teen Mauled By Dog At Hammels Park
By Howard Schwach
Afifteen-year-old youth, walking his grandmother's dog, was mauled by the animal at the new Rockaway Dog Park recently opened by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, sources say.

The unidentified teen was playing with the dog at about 10:30 a.m. on October 24, eyewitnesses say, when the animal, disturbed by something the teen was doing, began to rip at his body and clothing.

The boy's cries attracted passersby and the 911 emergency system; police and emergency medical personnel quickly responded.

The emergency sirens attracted the Pit Bull/Rottweiler mix and it left the boy bleeding on the ground.

One eyewitness told The Wave that the dog leaped onto one of the responding police cars, splayed on the hood and growling at the two officers inside.

The dog than ran away, eyewitnesses say, leaving the medical personnel to transport the youth to Peninsula Hospital Center with bites to both of his legs and his arms.

Sources say that the teen, who police declined to identify because of his age, remains at the hospital in stable condition.

The dog has yet to be found.
