Sanders Brings a H.E.A.P.of Help to Rockaway

With the winter season approaching, Councilman James Sanders Jr. is offering the Home Energy Assistance Programs (H.E.A.P.) to Rockaway residents. The fund was created to help low-income families pay their energy bills. This includes assistance with electricity, gas and oil bills. Payments vary, depending on household income and type of heating.

If you have an energy-related emergency, such as a power shut-off, you may apply for emergency benefits in addition to regular H.E.A.P. benefits.

"As someone who understands the difficulty in trying to keep your home warm and trying to preserve a dollar, I am happy to offer such a program to the people of the 31st District.

I urge all to take advantage of this opportunity," said Councilman Sanders.

Residents may qualify for H.E.A.P. benefits if they: are U.S. citizens or qualified aliens; have current income that is at or below the guideline for the household size; receive temporary assistance (safety, new or family assistance); receive food stamps; receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI); and live in subsidized housing and pay direct heating costs.

Those interested in applying must call to schedule an appointment to apply for H.E.A.P., Monday through Friday, beginning on November 1.

For further information, contact the Far Rockaway District Office at 718-471- 7014.
