for larger version       Far Rockaway Stunned By Truman In OT Loss
Davonne Gittens knows that rule. Unfortunately, he had to experience being on the losing end of an overtime battle. Harry S. Truman runningback Hector Sanabria took a handoff on their first possession in overtime and exploded past the Far Rockaway defense. Gittens, who was the safety on the field, couldn't get a hold of the Truman RB as he ran into the end zone to give the visitors a 14-8 victory last Saturday afternoon. Truman exploded and ran off from their sideline to greet Sanabria in the end zone. Gittens crossed his hands in disgust and bewilderment. He felt his team, whose record fell to 2-4, played better than the now 6-1 Truman Mustangs. But the result didn't match what the senior believed after the game. Far Rockaway fell to 2-4.
Far Rockaway had their chances in the second half to get a victory. They were the better team in the second half, and also because the 6-1 Truman Mustangs couldn't increase an 8-0 lead they had in the second half. Offensively, the Seahorses had few highlights. QB Marc Daniels completed a fourth quarter touchdown pass to WR Tijesunimi Osunkoya, which went for 60 yards to tie the game at 8-8. The Seahorses on defense created three turnovers and a timely strip of the football by Gittens on Truman runningback Malik Williams on the Seahorses 2-yard line in the fourth quarter was needed. But in the overtime, Truman stepped up when they needed to. Far Rockaway had the ball on the 20-yard line but they couldn't advance the football. Gregory Ibe, who rushed for 78 yards, attempted a 35 yard field goal on fourth down, but a botched snap erased a chance for three points. The Seahorses held on the first two Truman touches in the overtime. But trickery befell Far Rockaway on third down, as a double reverse handoff from Williams to Sanabria, fooled the defense as he ran to the end zone untouched. "We had many opportunities at the end and we just couldn't capitalize on those opportunities when we needed to," Seahorses coach Walter Wilkerson said. "It's frustrating." Gittens feels the same way. With three games left, he knows a chance at the playoffs will fade away if they don't win on Homecoming Day against Erasmus Hall (2-4). Beach Channel (2-4) will take a trip over the Verrazano Bridge and into Staten Island where they will face New Dorp (3-3) on Saturday, October 20 at 1 p.m.
