A Sad Goodbye To A Community Icon
If the measure of a person's worth is reflected in the number of people who show up for his or her funeral, then Barbara Eisenstadt was worth millions. More than 500 people were shoehorned into the sanctuary at West End Temple in Neponsit on Tuesday morning to say goodbye to Eisenstadt, the long-time president of the Rockaway Music and Arts Council, who has a list of community service credits so long that we would have to forego this week's news to recount them all. Barbara's talents were impressive and eclectic. They ranged from planting the flowers that grace Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Neponsit to the founding of the RMAC's Fall Festival, to the design of the omnipresent little pink packages that hold Sweet 'N Low sugar substitute. She was a mother, a grandmother, a community icon, a poet, a painter and a songwriter. At the funeral, family members and friends spoke eloquently of her love of family, art and her Rockaway community. Hers was a long-lasting love affair with all three. She will be sorely missed by the entire Rockaway community.
