The promise came during Brown's appearance at the Harry S. Truman Regular Democratic Club at Wavecrest Gardens in Far Rockaway this past Sunday. "We've taken down a lot of drug dealers in Rockaway," said Brown, who told residents the area still has a lot of drug activity. "We're not done, and we're not walking away." As reported in The Wave over the last two weeks, 52 people have been charged and 45 have been apprehended for selling drugs in and around the Dix McBride Apartments and the New York City Housing Authority's Redfern Houses in Far Rockaway. In February 2006, a sweep of the same housing developments netted 33 alleged drug pushers - including two members of the Bloods street gang.
While Brown said cameras would be helpful in prosecutions, the ones that were promised for Redfern Houses have not yet been installed. During a visit to the apartment complex in January, State Senator Malcolm Smith and Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer told tenant association leaders they would work to get cameras at the development. "The chair of NYCHA has requested it, and it is a matter of the money coming down," said Pheffer, the co-executive of the Democratic Club. "The actual installation is federal," continued the assemblywoman. "That's where the hold up is." Pheffer said elected officials are working to get the money as soon as possible. Brown advised any residents who witness drug activity to call the 101 Precinct or his office. The number for the DA's office is 718-286-6000.
"Ask for the narcotics bureau," said Brown. "There's someone available there 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
