She's been in the business of career coaching for more than 20 years and has helped hundreds of workers to plan for their retirement. Her advice for the over-fifty crowd: come to terms with the emotional issues surrounding retirement, discover who you are and what you want, and then go out and get it. Sounds simple, but as with most selfhelp books, there is a process for getting from point A to point B and beyond. That process, Rosenberg says, comes from the Five O' Clock Club, a highly-successful organization that provides outplacement services for professionals, managers and executives. Its services are offered through audio tapes, teleconferencing, the Internet and through books such as Rosenberg's. She says that the genesis of the book was her work as a career counselor with the teacher's union. "Even though the teachers had pensions and secure financial futures, many of them were confused and anxious about their next steps [into retirement]," she writes. "It became apparent to me that, for many, the major retirement issue was not really money; that emotional and psychological issues had to be addressed as well."
The book is divided into two sections. The first addresses understanding and coming to terms with the elements of retirement - psychological, emotional and financial. The second is about assessment - discovering who you are and what you want out of your "golden years." No matter what life stage you are presently in, she says, now is the time to begin planning, to move forward to meet the challenge that lies ahead. "Remember, retirement is not a word," she says. "It is a process that will take you to the rest of your life."
If you are getting into the zone where retirement starts to become more interesting, or if you are worried about your impending retirement, check out Rosenberg's book. At the very least, it will point you in some very interesting directions and provide you with some guidance on where you should be going and what you should be doing, even if you have your financial ducks all in a row.
