Bishop Kearney's Cross-Country Team Shines at Mayor's Cup

The Bishop Kearney girls cross country team captured ninth place in the highly competitive field at the Mayor's Cup Cross Country Invitational Championship last Saturday afternoon.

The meet, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, consisted of 35 teams from the CHSAA, PSAL and the AIS private schools league.

Bishop Kearney was led by junior Mary Gallagher (Belle Harbor), who competed against 250 runners over the 2 and one-half course in the rugged hills of Van Cortlandt Park.

The 80-degree temperatures didn't deter "Queen Mary" from capturing an 18th place medal and a fast time of 18 minutes 28 seconds, considering the hot and humid conditions.

Assistant coach John Edwards (Belle Harbgher's performance and said, "Mary had a lot of juice left in her legs after finishing the grueling course."

Teammate and Bishop Kearney junior Sarah Donahue (Belle Harbor) was impressive, running a personal best of 19 minutes and 12 seconds, as she just missed the 19th minute barrier.

Coach John Lovett (Rockaway Park) was extremely pleased with Donahue's mental toughness and gutsy finish in the race, which was instrumental in the team's ninth place finish.

The Bishop Kearney team is preparing for the upcoming Manhattan College High School Invitational on October 13. They will be competing in the largest high school meet in the United States with teams from around the country attending. The coaches wish the best of luck to the team.
