for larger version       The Enterprise Hotel I see you printed a picture of the old Enterprise Hotel and fishing station, (Historical Views 8/31), on the other side of the trestle, when the Long Island Railroad was put there. Owned and operated by Eugene and Ruth Bollermann (1890-1920). Although he was a piano tuner by trade and used to go around carrying his little black bag, he was always going to build another hotel on the Boulevard on East 14 Road before Hildebrand built the funeral parlor. Most of the houses in the background are on Ruffle Bar; there were many nice houses on Ruffle Bar. And you could only get there by boat. We used to row over for a swim and stay in the lee of one of those old houses, to stay out of the sun. When horseshoe and blue claws were plentiful, oysters and lobster, even. A lot of people from Broad Channel moved or relocated to Florida. Clara (Miller) Thomas, Boynton Beach, Tina Corbett to Spring Hill, Eva (Hausmann) Shere to Green Acres. Bob Fottermann to Venice, June and Bud Schur to Inverness, Ruth (Bullermann) Stemmann to Lake Worth. And there are a lot of good hurricanes there. Why Bud and Marie Stenson of Kissimmee nearly got wiped off the map ages ago.
