A New Firehouse Sounds Good
Dear Editor,

After reading this week's edition of the Wave, I felt compelled to write in. Councilman Saunders is constantly looking for ideas for the abandoned firehouse on Beach 59 Street. That's all well and good, but I think we on the Rockaway Peninsula and Broad Channel face a greater danger that our elected officials should address. With the population boom and new housing ALL over the peninsula, doesn't anyone think it's time for another Fire company to be stationed in Rockaway? Currently there are only three ladder companies stationed on the peninsula. With all the new homes and residents to protect, I believe that we are at risk. Now we all know the city of New York and the FDNY operate on a reactionary basis, just look at the terrible tragedy of the Deutsch Bank fire. We should not have to wait until someone gets hurt or even dies because the Peninsula is understaffed with firefighters. For instance, if there is a fire on Beach 60 Street that will require all three ladder companies to respond, now what happens should another fire occur around the same time in say Neponsit or Broad Channel? It's been proven that the quicker the brave firefighters respond the quicker they have to save someone's life. I just hope the city and the FDNY don't have to react to another tragedy!
