for larger version       His $20 Bill Was Phony, But His Arrest Was Real According to police, Derrick Roberts, 46, of 54-49 Almeda Avenue in Arverne, purchased some Chinese take-out food at a restaurant near his home on September 23, paying with a $20 bill that did not look quite right to the restaurant's staff, who called police. Police Officer Giuseppe Ganci of the 101 Precinct in Far Rockaway quickly collared Roberts, who allegedly had three more of the phony $20's in his pocket. According to a statement made by Ganci and released by Queens District Attorney Richard Brown, he recognized the bills as counterfeit as soon as he looked at them, because they were smaller than a normal bill and they all had the same serial number. In addition, court papers show, they were printed on regular bond paper, and not the special woven paper used by the U.S Government. Roberts was arraigned in Queens Supreme Court on September 24, charged with criminal possession of a forged document in the first degree.
He was released on his own recognizance for his next court date, which was set for October 9.
