Center of Hope for Seniors and Home Buyers

Councilman James Sanders Jr. and Margert Community Corporation will meet on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at 1 p.m. to announce the allocation of $500,000 to establish a new Senior Citizen and Home Buyer Education Center in Edgemere. The funding, made possible through the efforts of Councilman James Sanders Jr., has been designated for a comprehensive renovation project of St. Gertrude's gymnasium on Beach 37 Street in Edgemere.

"While we are grateful to the late Father Brendan Downing and the parishioners of St. Gertrude's for their support of the 50's Club, the Edgemere community has been far too long without a professionally staffed and adequately funded senior center. The seniors of this community from this day forth will no longer have to worry about being swallowed by the big hole, that once existed in the gymnasiums floor," said Councilman Sanders. "The people of Rockaway deserve the chance to be able to share in the dream of owning a home as well and this project addresses both of these priorities."
