for larger version       National Breast Cancer Awareness Month At the onset of October's Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Senator Malcolm A. Smith encouraged New Yorkers to "think pink;" to remind men and women that regular screening plays a key role in the fight against breast cancer, the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancer. "When you think about it, almost everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by breast cancer," said Senator Smith. "It becomes a pivotal part of life not only for those men and women diagnosed with the condition, but also for their loved ones and friends. I believe we all have a role to play in promoting greater public awareness of the deadly disease." The State Senate Democratic leader said wearing a pink article of clothing, or a pink breast cancer pin, will encourage more New Yorkers to talk with friends and loved ones about the importance of early detection. He also urges New Yorkers to take charge of their health with monthly breast self exams, regular visits to the doctor and periodic screening mammograms. An excellent resource for New Yorkers with mammography or breast cancer questions or concerns is the Adelphi, NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support program, which directs callers to community resources and provides telephone support through volunteers, all of whom are breast cancer survivors. The toll-free hotline can be reached at 1-800-877-8077.
Queens residents can also get information about low- or no-cost mammograms by calling the Queens Healthy Living Partnership (American Cancer Society) at 718-263-2225 or by dialing 311 and asking for mammogram information.
