This year, take a look outside for inspiration. This will help you to create a natural, refined look in your home that will last long after Halloween is over. It is no mystery of the beautiful, earthy tones of the fall come from- just look out your window at the vivid colors. Fiery red and orange leaves fade to copper and bronze tones, as they fall from the trees and dance in our streets. You could grow your own apples and pumpkins, or you might take a family trip to the farm to pick them fresh from the trees and vines. Either way, they have shades of red and orange that will be perfect for decorating your home. Indian corn has dramatic burgundy, black, and yellow kernels that make a nice welcome for your guests. Cluster a few pieces together and hang them on your front door. Hardy mums give a strong impact of color. Plant them in your garden, flowerbeds, or in pots cascading down the stairs in front of your home. They are available in yellows, rusts, and honey tones, white and purple. They are fairly easy to care for and add a lot of color to your décor. Bales of hay can be paired with wooden barrels and crates to make an interesting display on your porch or lawn. Set a barrel on its side, line it with brightly colored leaves and branches, and arrange different-sized pumpkins spilling out of the container. Stuff your own scarecrow and sit him on top of the hay. Lean an old shovel against the bale, or use it to prop up the scarecrow's arm. Old-fashioned wheelbarrows can be used as part of your décor, especially if you fill them with blooming plants. Hardy mums and winter pansies work well. There is a lot you can do indoors to decorate for the fall. Begin by changing your decorative pillows, towels and curtains to earthy tones. Use warm fabrics like velvet, chenille and fleece, in rich buttery yellows and rusts. You can string a garland of dried leaves and pinecones to trail along your staircase, or arrange scented candles and fresh gourds on your mantle. Try spicy scents such as "pumpkin pie" or "cinnamon buns" to celebrate the spirit of the season. You may even want to try cutting a small hole into a miniature pumpkin, and dropping a tea light candle inside. Tall glass vases can be filled with acorns, fresh apples or preserved wheat and clustered together on your coffee table.Before you begin to decorate, be sure to warm up a glass of apple cider, fill your home with the delicious scent of fall by baking a fresh pumpkin pie, and take a deep breath of the fresh, cool, fall air. It will give you that burst of energy and inspiration you need to decorate.
