Locals Lead Fontbonne To Victory Over Heated Rivals

The 2007 Fontbonne Hall Academy volleyball season opened on Monday, September 17, against archrival Bishop Kearney. Throughout, the spirited five-set match between the varsity squads, the momentum swung back and forth. In the end, the Tigers of Bishop Kearney held off the Bonnies by a score of 3-2 (19-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-8, 15-7).

The Bonnie Varsity was paced by Seniors Liz Rogers, Kelly Johnston, Jane Taikina and Pam Mendoza. Juniors include April Shaughnessy, Danielle Eaton, Chrissy DeMasi and Maggie Sheehan. Sophomore Sarah McCarthy completed the line-up.

Despite the tough loss, the team, and their head coach Linda Strong, expect a successful season, with a return to the Diocesan Playoffs.

On the Junior Varsity side, the Bonnies opened the defense of their Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA championship, and were able to defeat the Tigers JV 2-1 (25-21, 16-25, 15-13). The combination of sophomores Kara Egan and Justina Johnson, along with freshmen Cody Dripchak, Rebecca Resner and Brianna Johnston provided the Bonnies with the firepower needed to tame the Tigers.

This coming week, the volleyball season will be rolling into full swing, with three games on the schedule.
