John F.Sheehan
Retired Printer

John F. Sheehan, a Rockaway resident for more than 40 years, passed away on September 22. He was 75.

Sheehan was born in the Bronx on December 2, 1931 to Patrick and Mary Sheehan, of Kilrush, Co. Clare, Ireland.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in the early 1950s and served in Germany for two years. After returning to New York, Sheehan met his wife, Frances O'Connor, of Charlestown, Co. Mayo, Ireland.

The couple was married on September 17, 1955, and lived in Brooklyn, Ireland and Ozone Park before moving to Rockaway in 1967 with their four children.

Sheehan worked as a printer and proofreader for several major New York newspapers and later in life worked as a baggage handler at John F. Kennedy Airport.

A lifelong bagpiper, Sheehan marched in more than 20 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New York City.

As a senior citizen, Sheehan spent his winters in St. Petersburg and West Palm Beach, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Mary, and his brother, Joey.

Sheehan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances; sons, John, Brian and Brendan; daughter, Florence; grandchildren, Brendan, Michelle, Rebecca, Kathryn and Tara; and siblings Jimmy and Theresa Kenny.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Denis S. O'Connor Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church on Wednesday September 26. Internment was at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island.
