Valerie Osemwengie
Teacher

Valerie Osenwengie, a lifelong Rockaway resident, died September 15.

Osenwengie was born in Queens on October 14, 1955. She began her teaching career at Mapel Barrette Day Care Center in 1977, where she worked to educate children age 2 to 12, until this year. "She was a loving person to everyone she met," her family said. "Her students became her children; her friends became her family."

Osenwengie was preceded in death by her father, Albert John Legister.

She is survived by her husband, Tony Osemwengie; children: Cecil Grey Jr., Tyron Burnette and Michael Osemwengie; step children, Ingrid Grey, Mercy and Blessing Osemwengie; daughter-in-law, Rose Jones; brother, Albert Legister Jr; sister, Patricia Richards; sister-in-law, Gwen; brother-in-law, Leonard Richards; nieces, Roxanne Richards Archer, Janelle Richards, Shaniqua Richards and Vanessa Richards; nephew, Jabari Richards; grandson, Kareem Grey; grand nieces, Sarmaira Walker and Imani Richards, her best friend, Sharon; her two daughters, Octavia and Shantell; and grandson, Tobias Jones.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home, with visitation and services at Gaffney's Friendship Chapel. Disposition was at Oxford Hills Crematory.
