for larger version       Response to Beachcomber Column I have lived here in the Rockaways for nearly four years and am a regular Wave consumer. The Beachcomber column is usually one of my favorites; however, not in the September 14 issue. As the population grows and the community reaches for more prosperity and a better quality of life, one of the stumbling blocks to the wealthy developers and property owners, is the tens of thousands of us here on the peninsula who live at or below the poverty level. We depend on the lower rents or subsidized housing that are still available (although gradually disappearing) on the eastern twothirds of this peninsula. I was sad and angry to learn how little the Beachcomber thinks of us, in his comments regarding section 8 housing. You know, all of us "poor folks" did not arrive at this condition via the stereotypical route of booze, crack, crime and irresponsible procreation! Lots of us are clean, responsible, good citizens and good neighbors who are not a bit scary. Would you prefer, Beachcomber, that we were all homeless? Let's all remember that even a millionaire's bank account can eventually be emptied by catastrophic illness, disability, divorce, personal tragedy, etc. Thanks, Beachcomber, for your encouraging "us versus them" attitude, and your remarks that cast a dark shadow on landlords who rent to those of us who depend on section 8 and other rent subsidies, in order to have the basic dignity of a private kitchen, toilet, and a place to call home. (How lazy- and greedy- for us to want such things that most people take for granted.) May you and your family continue to prosper, to be in good health and live well. Just remember to not take it all for granted - because there are NO guarantees. Thank you.
