NYC Water Trail Includes New Spot On Jamaica Bay
Officials from the Department of Parks and Recreation joined Assembly Member Michelle Titus and others last weekend, to cut the ribbon on the NYC Water Trail's newest canoe and kayak launch, on an extreme eastern portion of Jamaica Bay. The launch, which was funded by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a grant from J.M. Kaplan through the Eastern Queens Alliance, is located at Idlewild Park Preserve, in Rosedale, Queens. Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe (fourth from right) called it "a vital link in [the water trail] that provides paddlers with access to Jamaica Bay and the wetlands and tributaries that so many wading birds, such as egrets, ibis and herons, call home." Parks doesn't list any official launches in Rockaway, but that could soon change, as the trail is, according to Parks, "ever-expanding."
