Historical Views of the Rockaways
East Bayside, Rockaway Point, N.Y. - 1933
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev,Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S.Locke

Most likely, this rare view of Reid's Dock at Rockaway Point in 1933, was taken from the Bayside Walk in front of Nels Friberg's Bungalow and Tent Resort at the Point, in the good old days!

Friberg is best remembered as one of the fiercest opponents of the Rockaway Operating Company, best described as a dictatorial landlord... Literally!

Before the "Pointers" banded together against the company, all their dayto day needs had to be purchased from company stores in the old Point area. Grocery store boats and general store boats were allowed to stop at docks or anchor offshore to sell needful things to "Pointers" with the old company's permission.

They sailed from Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn shore can be seen in the background, but can any "pointer" ID the exact spot from which this old photo was taken?

You can see many other photos of the Point in my book-"The Rockaways," visit arcadiapublishing.com to get a copy.
