Display The American Flag
Dear Editor,

What the Parks Enforcement Police (PEP) did in attempting to remove our American Flag was an absolute disgrace. This disgraceful behavior was even compounded by the ridiculous excuse given by Abigail Lootens, the spokesperson for the Department of Parks, blaming the poor shark, if anyone in their right mind would believe such a story. If the poor shark weren't there, it would have probably been the poor sand crabs running along waters edge.

If there wasn't any policy restricting flags on the beach, where did the PEP get the idea that they had to enforce such a policy? Our beaches had the American Flag displayed all summer, and no one ever said to remove them. The Department of Parks even had a superior insisting on the removal of the flag.

Can anyone cite exactly what is the responsibility of the Parks Enforcement Police? All one ever sees them doing is speeding up and down the beaches in their vehicles, sometimes with three or four people, getting very close to children and adults enjoying the beach. If this is what our tax dollars are paying for - God help us!

I wonder what the outcome would have been if the media hadn't arrived on the scene of this calamity. In any event, the Department of Parks would be wise to look into reeducating at least the two donkeys that disrupted a beautiful day at the beach for the affected families. It probably would also be wise to clue their spokesperson on communicating better. She could have been honest and been a hero by simply saying "the idiots blew it." Totally un-American and without merit.

JOHN DAVIS
