Local Youngsters Benefit From NAACP School Supply Giveaway
Youth Council Hands Out Nearly $500 In Supplies
By Miriam Rosenberg

NAACP member Lisa Emanuel, right, signs in youngsters, so they can receive their book bags.
Local youngsters found themselves better prepared for the new school year, after the NAACP Far Rockaway Youth Council sponsored a school supply giveaway last week.

The September 15 event, which took place on the corner of Beach 54 Street and Beach Channel Drive by the Ocean Bay Apartment complex, was highlighted by the distribution of more than 100 book bags. Thriftway Drugs in Far Rockaway donated $200 worth of book bags and school supplies valued at $75, while the New York State NAACP supported the effort by paying for more than $200 of supplies such as crayons, calculators, erasers, book covers and notebooks.

Kindergartener Alese, 5, and preschooler Mya, 2, are already wearing their book bags minutes after receiving them. Their grandmother, Maria Heyliger, brought them and their little sister Tasia to the school supply giveaway.

Some of the young people, who received free school supplies, show off their new book bags. They are joined by Karen Blantiny, the second vice president of the New York State NAACP; Ed Williams, the president of the Far Rockaway NAACP chapter; and Donovan Richards, the youth council co-chair.
