Sources at the New York City Fire Department said that the first report of a fire at 219 Beach 90 Street, an abandoned commercial building, was called in to 911 at 8:22 p.m. on September 16. First units on the scene found the entire first floor of the building fully involved in flames. They called an "all hands," which brought more units to fight the fire in the abandoned exchurch. At 8:30 p.m., a second alarm was broadcast, bringing units from all over Rockaway. All in all, fire department officials say, 25 fire units and 106 firefighters fought the fire. It took more than an hour to get the fire under control. By 9:37 p.m., fire sources say, the fire was out.
Officials say that four firefighters were injured in the fire. Three were taken with minor burns and smoke inhalation to the Peninsula Hospital Center, where they were treated and released. The fourth, with more serious burns to his face, was taken to the burn center at Cornell Medical Center, where he was treated and released, as well. Fire department sources say that the fire was not suspicious and the cause of the fire is under investigation. | ||||||
