The last payment was due to complete a loan granted to her by the Far Rockaway National Bank, to prevent foreclosure by the holder of her mortgage, who was not named. While other forms of transportation were at a standstill, bank manager John R. Burton contracted for a set of local sleigh owners to transport his depositors from home to the bank and back home again. How about that! Hickcock enjoyed the ride from Woodmere and back home again, due to memories of her childhood from the same.
The Far Rockaway National Bank, the building which still stands at the corner of Mott and Central Avenues, was in business for more than a half century, and was a national depository for many years. Competition from banking chains caused this bank to close in the early to mid-1960s. The bank opened for business in 1912.
