Historic Fly-In At Floyd Bennett Field

Celebrate aviation history with Gateway National Recreation Area at Brooklyn's Floyd Bennett Field. The two-day weekend celebration, which features vintage aircraft fly-ins by planes from the 1930s, '40s, '50s and beyond, is set for Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

Included in the armada of over 30 airplanes will be the Spirit of Freedom Douglas C-54 from the Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation, bi-planes from the Bayport Aerodrome, and a Lockheed C-130 Hercules. Additionally, the U.S. Air Force will salute the festivities with a fly-over by a Lockheed F117A Stealth Fighter on Saturday. That same day, the National Park Service and the Experimental Aircraft Association will unveil a replica 1903 Wright Flyer for exhibition in Hangar 4.

Ranger-led tours will include an exploration of the former control tower and a tour of the permanent collection of historic aircraft that are currently being restored by park volunteers. The general public will also have the opportunity to experience the thrill of flying a high-performance aircraft, as they test their skills in an F/A18 flight simulator.
