for larger version       'We Should All Respect The Flag' Dear Editor, As a lifelong Rockaway resident and proud American, I was stunned to wake up one day and see a 3x5 sign of beach rules and regulations screwed into the flag pole on Beach 126 Street. That flag pole was put up to honor 9/11 victims, our veterans and our children who are fighting and dying for our country. As a block, we respect our flag and country. The flag is replaced when torn, lowered to half mast on days our country mourns the past. It honors our great veterans, firefighters, city officials, presidents and police officers who have dedicated or given their lives for this city and country. When they pass, we honor them at half mast. As I'm writing this, I am numb and angry, but sadly it has happened another three times. The signs seem to mysteriously disappear rather quickly, I guess by some patriotic angel from above. I confronted a Parks employee as he was about to screw the fourth sign on our flag. I explained to the man what the flag represents and with a bit of angry exchanges between myself and the gentleman, he placed the sign in a different area. (My apologies to the employee, I think I could have handled it in a more civilized manner- my bad.) We all should respect the flag and what it stands for. It symbolizes everything we are and honors the unselfish people who make the country great and safe, so we can sleep at night.
