for larger version       Good Old Days Of Broad Channel Boy! Do I remember Broad Channel. In fact, when I was a kid, sand everywhere, no streets and no Boulevard. No cars to get here, only a boat from Hamilton Beach. Swim and play all day. And Grassy Point Hotel on the east side had bowling and golfing out in the open. And great beer parties. Later on when the boulevard was constructed, they built another hotel and called it Min and Bill's on East 20 and the Boulevard. Mr. Hartell ran both establishments and did pretty well in those days. Now the one on the bay is Broad Channel Yacht Club and the one on the Boulevard is Grassy Point (now up for sale). And we had a one-room shack on the Boulevard and 14th we all lived in on stilts. And my brother Arth would drill (and drill) -no electric- a hole in the floorboards and fish for killies. And Mom would cook a great meal of crabs, fish and clam chowder, of course on the kerosene stove. But the thing I really miss is the old two-holer out back. That became our two-car garage, later knocked down, and now we have a nice big pool. And that sure is a godsend in the hot weather, as I jump in two or three times to cool off. Broad Channel has really changed since the old days. No more outhouse, no more drawn fire wagon, and no more Enterprise Hotel. And don't worry 'cause I'll keep writing as long as I live- I'm now 85.
