Mercedes Padilla of the DEP explained the situation on Wednesday, August 29. "Basically, on Rockaway Beach Boulevard - from the Beach 30's to the 50's - we are flushing a newly installed trunk main," said Padilla. According to a DEP press release, hydrants illegally opened during the summer to get relief from the heat could pose a danger. "Opened hydrants lower water pressure, cause problems at hospitals and medical facilities and reduce the flow of water needed to fight fire." Yet, Padilla said there was no cause for concern. "They know what they are doing," she said. "They are part of the DEP crew." While not all the hydrants along that stretch of road are open, the same press release notes that "an open hydrant - running full for one minute consumes the same amount of water used to run 400 shower heads.
