In Quarters
The RMAC has asked the BCVFD once again to be a part of their festival to be held on September 8 and September 9 from 11 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. at Riis Park field. Once again, the BCVFD will have a table set up for selling T-shirts, raffles, and receiving donations. Plus, we will give out some pamphlets for anyone interested in joining the BCVFD. Last month, the BCVFD participated in a inter-agency EMS drill held at the Kings Plaza Mall in Brooklyn, along with the FDNY, EMS, and Rockaway Point Vollies. This Sunday morning we will be involved in another drill held at Penn Station in Manhattan. These drills are a vital part of ongoing training and mutual aid with the BCVFD and other NYC agencies. In this day and age, everyone thinks about when and where the next attacks will be. As one of the survivors who experienced first-hand that horrific day, September 11, I know I still look over my shoulder at every loud noise or plane that flies low. These drills that we participate in help to keep members aware of what could happen, but at the same time, they help us to know what to do in a situation like 9-11-2001.
I have also found out that the BCVFD, along with other EMS agencies, will be receiving new 800 mghz portable radios from the FDNY to be used in our drills, as well as on the scene of any major incident in our area. The radios are free, allocated through a federal grant provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These radios will help with the communications on scene, as per the NIMS (National Incident Manage System) set up by FEMA. This will help to ensure that all communications and agencies that respond to a situation are on the same page. Most of the BCVFD members, myself included, have taken some of the classes provided by FEMA for the new NIMS. Those who participated received national certificates in incident command, strategy and planning. Anyone interested in joining the BCVFD please contact us online www.broadchannelvfd.org or call 718-474-6888 or just stop by the firehouse to fill out your application. Be safe and always help to support your local vollies!
