for larger version       Police Investigate Shootings At Redfern Houses
Tyrece Winslow, 23, was shot Sunday, August 19 as he walked through the housing complex at about 2:20 p.m., police said. Winslow, a resident of the complex, suffered a single gunshot wound to his upper right leg while walking through the development. He was treated at a local hospital. Amother of three has a new refrigerator and kitchen window in her Redfern apartment - but only because stray gunfire jeopardized her family's safety while destroying the old ones. Tamica Mabry awoke early last Friday, August 17 to the sound of gunshots outside her third-floor apartment at the Redfern Houses. But the mother of three children, ages 13, 10 and 6, didn't get out of bed, because she feared she'd get hit with a stray bullet. Her children heard the shots, too, but they didn't dare get up either.
At the time, Mabry and her children had no idea how close one of those shots had actually come. Mabry rose out of bed the next morning, went to the kitchen and discovered a broken window and a bullet hole in the freezer door. "My refrigerator magnets were all over the floor," Mabry told The Wave. "The bullet had come through my kitchen window and hit my freezer." Mabry called police, who took a report and are investigating. A new refrigerator was delivered later on Friday, and her window was finally replaced on Tuesday, she said. Mabry was grateful that she and her family weren't injured and said she's pursuing a transfer out of the troubled housing project. State Senator Malcolm Smith has said he wants to provide funding for cameras at the complex, something he discussed with 101 Precinct Lieutenant Gary Messina during a two-day listening tour in April. Messina said additional manpower would also be useful. "They're always shooting," Mabry said of the thugs who plague the area. "And I'm not the first apartment this has happened to."
