Extended Route For QM16 Bus Announced
By Miriam Rosenberg

As a result of requests from commuters, the MTABus Company will be extending the route of the QM16 express bus from Rockaway Park to midtown Manhattan.

"Currently, the route has a Queens terminus in Rockaway Park at Beach 116 Street," said Thomas J. Savage, the president of the company, in a letter to Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer notifying her of the change. "In response to recent community requests, MTABus will be extending the Queens terminus of the QM16 to Neponsit to provide direct peak period express bus access to the residential community along Rockaway Beach Boulevard between 116 Street and Beach 147 Street."

Starting Tuesday, September 4, those heading to Manhattan can board the QM16 at the following intersections along Rockaway Beach Boulevard: Beach 147 Street, Beach 141 Street, Beach 135 Street, Beach 127 Street, Beach 122 Street; and Beach 115 Street.

Commuters returning to Rockaway can exit the QM16 at these intersections along Rockaway Beach Boulevard: Beach 122 Street, Beach 126 Street, Beach 135 Street, Beach 141 Street and Beach 147 Street.

As noted above, the terminus at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 116 Street will be moved to Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 115 Street for safety reasons, said Victor Lee, the Principal Transportation Planner for the bus company.

Except for those changes, the QM16 route remains the same. There are no changes to the QM17 route.

Currently, the QM16 leaves Beach 116 Street five times - twenty minutes apart - each weekday morning starting at 6:32 a.m. It makes five return runs from 3 Avenue and East 34 Street in Manhattan, also twenty minutes apart, each weekday evening starting at 4:40 p.m.

Lee said schedules for the extended route should be on the MTA Bus Company's website, http://www.mta.info/ busco/schedules/index.html, by August 27 or August 28.
