Clarence Akers Sr.
Longshoreman

Clarence Akers Sr., a longtime Rockaway resident, died August 9.

Akers, a longshoreman, was born in Jefferson Township, Pennsylvania on June 23, 1935. He served his country in the U.S. Army and was proud of being a paratrooper in the 101 Airborne, according to family, who also said Akers was always there to lift up everyone's spirits.

Akers was preceded in death by his son, Anthony M. Akers and siblings, Mildred Akers McCain, Howard Akers, Franklin Akers, Gloria Akers McCain, Shirley Akers Hall and Patricia Akers Coffee.

He is survived by his son, Clarence A. Akers Jr.; sister, Reva Akers Barrett; sisters-in-law, Mary Burt and Joyce Akers; grandchildren, Jacinta V. Akers and Anthony A. Akers; stepgrandchildren, Joann Jones (James), Jason Somerville and Clifford Pitter IV; great-grandchildren, Bryanna Jones, James Jones and Alicia Somerville; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. Visitation and a service were held at St. John's Baptist Church in Inwood. Interment was at Pinelawn Cemetery in Farmingdale, New York.
