Shootings Fell Four In Two Incidents
By Howard Schwach
The summer shooting season went into high gear last weekend, with two shooting incidents that left four Rockaway residents in the hospital with gunshot wounds, police sources say.

On Saturday, August 11, at 9:50 p.m., officers from the 101 Precinct received a call of shots fired at 125 Beach 17 Street in Far Rockaway.

Police say they found Lawrence Jones, 36, of Dinsmore Avenue in Bayswater, with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. Jones reportedly was uncooperative with police investigators.

Shortly after finding Jones, police canvassing local hospitals found Richard Brown, 15, of 8103 Hammels Boulevard, at St. John's Episcopal Hospital being treated for a gunshot wound to his right shoulder. Brown reportedly told police that he was at Beach 17 Street when he was shot and decided to go to the hospital for treatment.

Early the next morning, at about 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 12, two other locals were shot in front of 2237 Dix Avenue in Bayswater.

Police sources say that they found Devon Kitt, 15, of Dix Avenue, with a gunshot wound to his right leg. Kitt told investigators that he was shot from across the street and never saw his assailant.

While police were investigating Kitt's shooting, officials at the emergency room at the Peninsula Hospital Center on Beach 51 Street called police to say that the hospital had another shooting victim, Fatima Jackson, 15, of McBride Street in Bayswater.

Jackson, who suffered a gunshot wound to her left forearm, told police that she had been shot on Dix Avenue.

Jackson was treated and released, police said, adding that none of the gunshot wounds were life-threatening.

Detectives from the 101 Precinct Squad are investigating, but police declined to say whether the shootings were related, or what they believe the motive to be for either
