Don't Blame It All On The DFD's
Rockaway residents tend to blame all of the beach woes- overcrowding, garbage, fights, drinking problems - on the people who are down for the day, those we tenderly call "DFD's." That is not always true, however, as witnessed by one local school teacher who saw a pile of garbage under a lifeguard stand and witnessed the lifeguards continually adding to the pile with their own bottles, bags and wrappers. When she questioned the lifeguard, who was leaving at 6 p.m. about the garbage, he told her, "somebody would take it away," and that he was too busy and loaded down with equipment to do the job himself. The teacher went back later and photographed the remaining garbage that was never taken away and might well still be there in September.
