Trip And Fall Leads To Cross Bay Boulevard Death

A Brooklyn man was struck and killed when he tripped crossing Cross Bay Boulevard in Broad Channel early Sunday morning, police say.

Sources say that Justin Vanwert, 53, and his wife were crossing Cross Bay Boulevard at West 13 Road at about 12:48 a.m. on Sunday morning when he tripped and fell into the path of a 1995 Ford Escort driven by an unidentified 23-year-old Rockaway woman.

The Brooklyn man was pushed over the hood and into the window of the car, according to sources at the scene.

The driver stayed with Vanwert and called 911.

Vanwert, who sustained head injuries, was transported to Peninsula Hospital Center on Beach 51 Street, where he was declared dead at 1:50 a.m.Police say neither drugs nor alcohol played a part in the accident and that no charges will be brought against the woman who drove the car.
