Historical Views of the Rockaways
For Those Rockawayites Who Collect Matchbooks
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev,Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S.Locke
During a recent postcard and paper ephemera show and sale, yours truly came across and purchased three matchbook covers concerning the Rockaways.

1. Lou's Dairy, a self-service market, was located on the south side of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and the west side of Beach 85 Street. There, cold cuts were sliced and farmer/cottage cheese, cream cheese and butter were taken out of a wooden tub and placed in special containers and wrappings of cardboard and wax paper.

2. Famous Berger, Inc. had a delicatessen, restaurant, bar and grill located at 1913 Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway. Royal Scarlet Quality Foodstuffs were sold here. Berger's also had another deli on Beach 116 Street, which was very popular.

3. The Anchor Inn (later known as Johnny's Place) was located in Far Rockaway at the foot of Beach 5 Street, south of the short Seagirt Avenue and east of Beach 9 Street. Shore dinners, steaks, chops, seafood, wines, liquors and most popular beers on draught were served. The back of the cover has a map featuring directions to the Inn. It is interesting to note that Amstel Boulevard (currently Beach Channel Drive) connected Crossbay Road to Seagirt Avenue on this map.

How about it, Wave readers? Any remembrances of these old places?
