Fix Seaside Center For Seniors
Dear Editor,

A "life style" died last week on Monday, August 6, 2007, at 1 p.m. A call was received from the sponsoring organization, Catholic Charities, which was informed by the Department of Buildings of New York City that the building address 90-01 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, Rockaway Beach, New York, [The Seaside Center] has by order of the DOB been CONDEMNED. Everyone must leave there right away. No if, ands or buts. Our director, Rose Lawrence, gave us the sad news.

As for the building, it needs: a new roof, new ceiling, doors, leveling of floors, new carpeting (old carpeting is wet and mildewed). When all this will be repaired- ask the landlord!

The center is a home-away-fromhome, where you get a hot breakfast and a hot lunch. It's not only food, it's where our seniors come to read the paper, watch TV or play checkers, dominoes, or cards; laughter and talk could be heard in the center. I want my center fixed, MR. LANDLORD.

I and my brother and sister seniors want it repaired. Some of us eat lunch at the JASA center on Beach 121 Street in Rockaway Park. We thank the director, Nancy Fine, for helping us in our time of need. Thank you, Rockaway Park Senior Center.

The Seaside Center (Hammels, as it's referred to sometimes), has been at the site for 30 or 35 years. It's a "life style" to many seniors.

Seaside supplies Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors who cannot get out or are unable to go anywhere. Mr. Landlord, repair our center building. The building today is just wood, brick and cement, empty and lonely. No happy times anymore. Our sponsor, Catholic Charities, is working to find us a temporary home until repairs are made to the building and we can come home again.

We seniors are in flux; some of us hope it's only a dream and it's not real. Seaside Center is a "life style" to many. MR. LANDLORD, FIX OUR BUILDING CENTER.

B. SULLIVAN
