Weiner Renews Clemency Request

For the tenth consecutive year, Representative Anthony Weiner renewed his clemency request for a former U.S. Naval Civilian Analyst, who is serving a life sentence for espionage.

Jonathan Pollard, who celebrates his 53rd birthday this week, was charged with passing classified information to the Israeli government in 1985. He has been imprisoned for longer than any other person convicted of espionage on behalf of a U.S. ally.

"Mr. Pollard did commit a serious crime and he deserved to be punished for this action," Weiner said in a letter to the President. "However, after reviewing the facts of the case and receiving multiple classified briefings on his matter, I believe that he has served a sentence that far exceeds the appropriate term for the crime he has committed."
