for larger version       Queens Schoolyards And Playgrounds Will Be Going 'Green' Queens schoolyards and playgrounds in need of repair will be getting revamped, as part of Mayor Bloomberg's $1.2 billion initiative, PlaNYC, to make New York City greener and more sustainable. Bloomberg recently unveiled the new proposal for the Department of Parks and Recreation to improve playgrounds, schoolyards and recreation areas throughout the city. PlaNYC also ensures that all Southeast Queens residents will be within a 10-minute walk from a recreation area. "We need to continue to provide community recreational opportunities and initiatives that take advantage of New York's green spaces, which greatly contribute to a healthier city," State Senator Malcolm Smith said in a press release. Designating $111 million for schoolyards and playgrounds, Parks will also work with the Board of Education to complete all schoolyard construction by 2010 and open playgrounds that are closed after school and on weekends. "With the alarming national increase in childhood diabetes and obesity rates, this is an important step in increasing the health of our children," Smith said.
Peninsula schools being refurbished under PlaNYC include P.S. 106 in Far Rockaway and P.S. 114 in Belle Harbor.
