From The Artists Studio
The great Guy Nevirs and his band. August 23 & 30: TBA. Next RAA General Meeting: Monday, August 13 @ 7:30 p.m. in building T-149. All are welcome. Bring your latest artwork. This is the fourth year that RAA has hosted the High School to Art School Portfolio Development Program in sTudio 7 Gallery. The excellence of the students' work is attested to by the 100% acceptance rate of all students from the first three years into top art schools nationwide and abroad. This year, the group was larger and the quality of the drawings produced was the highest yet. The artworks were on view in sTudio 7 Gallery August 2- August 9. Unfortunately, this columnist received information about the exhibit of work too late to place it in last week's issue. RAA thanks the Queens Council on the Arts and the outstanding arts instructors for this important program. Congratulations and good luck to all the talented students. Rockaway Theatre Company: "Steel Magnolias" opens this weekend. Dates: August 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 at 8 p.m.; August 12 at 2 p.m. For tickets: 718-850-2450. When I utter the words, "Steel Magnolias," I smile. And I am very proud. As one of the cast members, I can tell you that rehearsals, while hard work, are very pleasurable. We laugh a lot. The serious/comic play by Robert Harling is witty and funny, warm and intelligent. Those same adjectives can be used to describe my fellow actresses and the talented directing team of Peggy Page and Michael Wotypka. Each actress has taken her role and made it her own, illuminating the character and the story with personal and eternal truths. I am proud to be part of this production. On a wonderful set designed by Peggy Page, built by Tony Homsey, with assistance from Anna Desiderio, decorated by Cliff Hesse and painted by Cliff Hesse, George Hoeffer and Faye Peithman, we have become those six women in Truvy's Salon who support and love each other under all circumstances. The words of the directors are most eloquent. Wotypka writes, "I had such a blast directing "The Women" with Peggy Page that I leapt at the chance to work on another all-female production. What is so appealing about "Steel Magnolias" is that it requires pure ensemble acting, which is my favorite type of acting. Peggy and I had to be meticulous in our casting. We had to make sure that the audience would believe these women shared this level of intimacy. Our cast really bonded and the closeness they feel for each other permeates the production." Page states, "Women's solidarity and 'southern' style sparkle in this funny and tender, 1987 play. Set in a Louisiana hair salon, the play traces the lives of proprietor Truvy, her inexperienced assistant and four of her regular customers as they run the gamut of the birth, marriage and death cycle that is life. [It is] a charming and engaging piece, which draws on the underlying strength and love of the unique female relationship." The successful play was made into a hit movie. But the stage play is better - stronger, tighter and more focused in its construction. With all those "X" chromosomes swimming around, I hope you "Y's" will attend, as well. Both men and women will be touched and amused by "Steel Magnolias." After all, you can't make a magnolia tree seed without the pollen. Dan and Liz Guarino are doing a book of vintage photos of Broad Channel for Arcadia Publishing. They would greatly appreciate the loan of any pictures of the Channel in days gone by. The older the better. They assure that all originals will be handled with care and will be returned in a timely fashion. Since Dan and Liz are doing their own scanning, your prints will never leave the area. Deadlines are approaching. Please contact them if you have the appropriate material.
