New York One news last week featured a segment on Jamaica Bay and its rapidly disappearing salt marshes. For those who do not have cable TV or didn't see it, it was a short but rather powerful segment. The effects of losing all the marshes were mentioned and a diagram showed the difference between what was there once and what there is now. Of course, it is predicted that there will be flooding without the salt marshes, among other things. The nitrogen-rich waste dumped in the bay by the sewage treatment plants was discussed. The bay and salt marshes looked so beautiful in the pictures and, of course, Broad Channel was mentioned. One of our neighbors, Dan Mundy, spoke for the camera. The last thing he said was great- about having something left (meaning the bay and marshes) for our children and grandchildren.
