Looking Backward 20 Years Ago... "Communities like Bayside, Rockaway Park and Elmhurst are virtually being destroyed," Queens Borough President Claire Shulman said at the July 29 Queens Borough Board meeting. She was protesting the building of highrise apartments in low-density neighborhoods of single-family homes. Shulman argued the new high-rises compromise neighborhood character and deplete real estate value. Long Island Lighting Co. is being complimented for meeting record electric demand during days of sweltering weather last month without plant breakdowns or power reductions. 100 and 101 Precinct detectives are keeping their eyes open for Lucy Brockington, who may be in the Rockaways after allegedly kidnapping a three-week-old girl from the pediatrics ward at Harlem Hospital Center on Tuesday. Brockington is a former Far Rockaway resident who is wanted for a 1981 auto theft. The plan for "affordable housing" under the Nehemian Housing plan drew complaint from the Rockaway Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting. A new city report, called the "Dodge Report," says that Rockaway's Urban Renewal Area should be set aside for the Queens Citizen's Organizaton (QCO) to build 3,000 townhouses there. Boaters battling angry seas need not worry. For those without a weather radio or VHF, a phone call to the National Weather Service's hurricane hotline can provide information on incoming hurricanes or tropical storms. Rockaway residents are banding together to protest the proposed construction of a homeless shelter in Edgemere. The rally will take place at One Police Plaza in Manhattan at 4:30 p.m. - before the Board of Estimate votes on the issue at a 6 p.m. hearing. Buses from Rockaway to Manhattan will be available. 30 Years Ago... More than 500 kids with special needs enjoyed a day at Rockaway's Playland this past Saturday. A great time was had by all.Considering that it is so young, Gateway has a lot to offer. The beach at Breezy Point and the bird sanctuary in Broad Channel are just a couple of nice places to spend the day. We were told there is a lot less trouble caused by the nude bathers at Riis Park. The word is that at least they have no place to carry concealed weapons. The Rockaways are coming into some money. Mayor Beame said we will now be able to repave Beach Channel Drive, repair the boardwalk and finish work on the new library. Burned out and abandoned buildings are fast becoming this peninsula's forgotten problem. Let's dig out again those "60 photographs" of "90 buildings" that the Rockaway Council of Concerned Citizens sent to Community Planning Board 14, in an attempt to have the buildings removed by the city. 40 Years Ago... Threatened picketing of Kennedy Airport by members of the Dayton Beach cooperative to protest aircraft noise has been suspended. Bayswater civic leaders are urging that the construction of Bayswater Park commence immediately. Restoration of the beach is proceeding ahead of schedule, The Wave learned, from the Parks Department. Three months were allotted to contractors to pump the hydraulic fill from Jamaica Bay to the Beach 95 to Beach 83 Street sites. Contrary to reports that have been published elsewhere, no pollution tests are being made of the waters in the Rockaways.

Years Ago... In honor of her husband's birthday, Mrs. Walter H. Blum entertained her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Blum, at her home at 217 Beach 130 Street on Saturday. A Nike Hercules installation will replace the present anti-aircraft battery in Jacob Riis Park before long. It's a new model with a much longer range than the present Nike Ajax and will be the last word in enemy aircraft destruction.
