Notes from the High C's It's freezing and the snow is falling all white on the ground. Oh! Wrong season, but didn't that sound nice and cooling? See, we're never happy. It's either too hot or too cold and right now, it's too hot for me. Though I love the summer, probably a holdover from my years as a kid living on the beach every day, I think I've had enough of 90 degree days for now. I know that for the concert last Sunday, the weather was beautiful and Dean Karahalis and The Long Island Pops gave a fine performance. What can we say about Dean Karahalis that has not been said before in one of these columns? He is the consummate showman, a fine musician and a very talented man. Needless to say, I'm sure he must lose five pounds the way he jumps around on the stage. Unfortunately, I had to attend a dinner given by my office and so I missed one of my favorites. I want to thank Steve Yaeger for doing a solo in presenting our programs. As far as our membership drive for 2007, we are moving ahead and look forward to having all of our members renew for the year. We need all the help we can get to continue presenting our programs- the concerts, the festival, our school-based Music Memory and opera programs, and the Literary Festival, which in 2008 will include a film festival as well. I was speaking to a friend from the film business and told her about the film festival being our newest undertaking. I said in a kidding way that Robert Redford and his Sundance Festival will have nothing on us, whereupon she suggested a name for our event; The SandDance Festival, which I think is quite appropriate. I have to bring that name up at our next meeting. Our Fall Festival is on Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9, and we have several new crafts vendors along with new food vendors. We are in need of volunteers and if you can give us at least three or four hours any time over those two days, please get in touch or see one of us at the next concert. The Culinary Institute and Frederic Vanderbilt trip on October 24 is moving along nicely and our bus is more than two thirds full, so if you are thinking about going along, please let us know. You can reach me at 718-474-8353. If I'm not there, please leave your name and number and I'll get back to you. There will be a three-course lunch at the Institute, which will include a choice of entree, a set appetizer and dessert. If you have never been there you are in for a treat. Not only is it a beautiful building that was formerly a monastery, but you are served by the students who are learning how to run restaurants, as well as learning to be chefs. There are shops to visit and things to buy and it is a really wonderful place. Unfortunately, we will not be able to take a tour of the school because, even though I made reservations months ago, there were no tour reservations available, but everyone will enjoy the trip even without the tour. At the Vanderbilt Mansion, there will be a short film about the family and then a guided tour of the building. All I can say is that these people sure knew how to live. The furnishings may be more than we could ever put in our homes, but everything looks beautiful from what I have seen. What do they say about how the other half lives? The last concert on August 19 will feature Kenny Vance and The Planotones. Kenny and the group are so well known by all of us, that all I can say is come and listen and have a good time. You're the best audience and we appreciate seeing you at each event. Remember, if you haven't renewed your membership, now is the time to do it and if you want to become a member, please call me at 718-474-8353 and I'll send you an application. Residents To Attend SUNY Oswego Two Rockaway Park residents have reserved their places as freshmen at SUNY Oswego. Set to attend the school are Jose D. Uribe, a 2007 graduate of Newtown High School, and Kevin G. Leonard, a graduate of St. Francis Preparatory School. Fall classes will begin August 10.
