Fee Hike For Riis Park Is Not Acceptable

The following letter was sent to Rita Mullally, Supervising Ranger at Riis Park, in response to a propose fee hike for the park's parking facilities. Dear Ms. Mullally,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed parking fee increase for Jacob Riis Park.

It is my understanding that a comparability study was conducted that determined the suggested 100 percent increase for Jacob Riis Park Parking. Raising the fee for parking from $5 to $10 simply because, "other parks in other areas charge similarly," is an outrageous conclusion.

Jacob Riis Park is one of the most visited parks in the National Park System, why is that? It is because as an urban national park, Jacob Riis provides a safe, secure and comfortable place for New Yorkers to visit the shorefront.

The daily visitors, who oftentimes sit in traffic and pay a toll at the Marine Park Bridge, find the cool breezes and refreshing surf of Riis Park a haven from the hot summer. Riis Park is a location that many visitors frequent on a semi-regular basis. This fee increase would have a devastating effect on the affordability of a "fun filled day at the beach."

Additionally, Riis Park is home to one of NYC's only pitch and putt golf courses. Currently, the golf course at Riis provides an affordable, fun way for family and friends to hone their golf skills.

The cost for a weekly round of golf would experience a dramatic increase due to the rise in parking fees. No other golf facility in NYC charges a fee for golfers. The greens fees are high enough. Increasing the parking would force most golfers to look elsewhere for their golfing pleasure.

I implore you to reconsider your request to double the parking fees at Riis Park, increasing from $5 to $10. The $5 fee is already exorbitant enough.

New York residents deserve a national park that is accessible and affordable,
