for larger version       NAACPYouth Council Back After 20-Year Absence After a 20-year absence, the Far Rockaway NAACP branch chapter is reactivating its youth council in order to develop strong leadership qualities in the community's young adults. "Given the environment and its youth issues, it is our responsibility to prepare our young people for positive civic responsibility," NAACP President Dr. Ed Williams said in a press release. "For too long we have left the youth out of the planning process of our community and we must involve them." The Far Rockaway chapter will convene August 7 at 7 p.m. in the Lucille Rose Daycare Center at 148 Beach 59 Street. There, Donovan Richards and the Rev. Barrieleva Evans will administer the new council. Anyone younger than 25-years-old who is familiar with NAACP policies may apply for youth council membership. "In this day and age in Rockaway, we must bring new ideas and different methods to engage our youth," Donovan Richards said in a press release. "This is the only way to stop the violence in the community."
