for larger version       Deacon Ernest E.Woods Sr. Deacon Ernest E. Woods Sr., a longtime Rockaway resident, died July 15. He was 85. Woods was born in Roxboro, North Carolina on September 1, 1921. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force as a Private First Class on September 14, 1942. He served four years, earned an honorable discharge and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. Woods, a retired construction worker, was a member of First Church of God in Christ in St. Albans, where he served under Pastor Martello Payne and the late Pastor Bernard Harris who spiritually mentored him for over 40 years. He was a caretaker, a board trustee, an usher and a deacon. Woods was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Annie Mae Austin Woods; son, Cornell; grandson, Robert; brothers, William, Johnny, Mark, Roy and Priemer Thomas; sisters, Frances and Martha; son-in-law, Pastor Bernard Harris; five brothersin law and three sisters-in-law. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Deaconess Evelyn Woods; sons, Eugene Austin (Tina) of Florida, Ernest Woods Jr., Joseph Woods (Donna), Sterling Woods Sr. (Renee) of New Jersey, Kennedy Woods Sr. (Claudina), Mitchell Woods (Donna), Earl Sconiers of Georgia, Boyd Bostic and Steven Bostic (Kim), both from Georgia, and Gary Bostic; daughters, Viola Laidlaw, Shally Webb (George), Gladys Woods-Harris, Jo-Anne Woods and Stephanie Bostic; brother, Matthew Woods; sisters, Viola McClaim, Eleanor Cole and Elizabeth Patterson; 34 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; sister-in-law, Mother Lizzie Cross (Sam); brother-in-law, Elder James Bull (Betty); and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home. Visitation and services were held at the First Church of God in Christ in St. Albans. Interment was at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale.
