M.A.S.Swing's Big Band Sound a Hit at Riis Park

The music definitely had that "swing." On Sunday, July 22, scores of beachgoers, bicyclists and strollers celebrated the 75th anniversary of Jacob Riis Park, as they enjoyed a live concert showcasing the "toe tapping" hits of the Big Band era. The event, staged at the site of the original Riis Park Bandstand on the boardwalk at Bay 9, featured the sounds of M.A.S. Swing, under the direction of bandleader Marie Stack and musical director Walter Birkhold. Standards by Cole Porter, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and others filled the program.
Stan Auld, veteran of many years with the Big Bands, was a featured soloist on clarinet.
Young and old thought the music was great.
Dick Bennett "got the joint jumping," pounding out the solo drum riffs on Benny Goodman's classic "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)".
